R. Subramanian retired as professor and head of the civil engineering department at the National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Kerala University and a master's degree in structural engineering from Roorkee University (now IIT, Roorkee).

Prof. Subramanian has over 35 years of experience in teaching civil engineering subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has considerable experience in the field of teacher training and curriculum and media development. He is also the author of Strength of Materials, 3e (2016), Fundamentals of Surveying and Levelling (2014), and Surveying and Levelling (2012).
