Francis Turner Palgrave and Fifth book by John Press
The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language was first published in 1861. Compiled by Francis Turner Palgrave, with guidance from Lord Tennyson, it was a product of its time—featuring no living poets and omitting authors such as John Donne and William Blake, whose works are now considered foundational to English literature.

Description
The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language was first published in 1861. Compiled by Francis Turner Palgrave, with guidance from Lord Tennyson, it was a product of its time—featuring no living poets and omitting authors such as John Donne and William Blake, whose works are now considered foundational to English literature.
Since its original publication, the collection has been significantly expanded. The first Oxford World’s Classics edition appeared in 1907, with additional poems added in 1914, 1928, 1941, 1959, 1960, and 1963. A major update came in 1965, when John Press compiled a new Fifth Book that included contemporary poets as well as previously overlooked figures—including Tennyson himself.
Testament to its enduring popularity, the current edition retains Palgrave’s original ‘summary’ notes on the first four books, along with annotations for individual poems.
