With the fall of the Berlin Wall, democracy seemed to have won the day. Yet, events in such diverse places as Turkey and the Philippines, the Brexit vote, and the election rhetoric of Donald Trump raise questions about the future of democracy. With essays by thought leaders and opinion makers from across the globe, Democracy under Threat considers challenges to functioning democracies. It highlights deficiencies of leadership and institutions and the threats posed not only by populism, caudillism, and dynastic rule but also by the spread of authoritarianism and its spirit.

Rights:  World Rights

Description

Much seems to be going wrong with democracy at present. The global advance of democracy is stalled and, what is worse, cynicism about democracy is growing. Recent events in such diverse places as Turkey and the Philippines, the Brexit vote, and the election rhetoric of Donald Trump raise questions about the future of democracy.
Presenting papers by academics, diplomats, journalists, political leaders, and other thought leaders from different parts of the world, Democracy under Threat considers challenges to functioning democracies from within and outside. It highlights deficiencies of leadership and institutions and the threats posed not only by populism, caudillism, and dynastic rule but also by the spread of authoritarianism and its spirit.
This book helps to make sense of what is happening to democracy in the post-truth era.

Review

Democracy under Threat is essential reading for anyone concerned about democracy in these troubled times.
—Wolfgang Schüssel, Federal Chancellor of Austria (2000–7)

Democracy under Threat appears at the most timely moment. The rise of populism in established democracies, the turn toward authoritarian government in recent democracies, and the failure of democratization in autocratic systems have brought to an end a quarter of a century of almost universal expectations of a worldwide flourishing of democracy. This volume will help the readers to reflect on the pressing threats to democracy in their home countries and in the world at large.
—Abram de Swaan, Emeritus University Professor of Social Science at the University of Amsterdam
