Description

Edward John Thompson who was in West Bengal during the period 1910-1913 wrote the first major English-language critical study of Tagore's poetry. The work involved him in difficult relations with Tagore, and also with a wide circle of Calcutta intellectuals. The present study by E. P. Thompson draws upon his father's extensive collection of letters and journals, and throws light on unfamiliar aspects of the relations between the two men and between Bengali and British culture. In an important appendix another scholar, Dr Uma Das Gupta, edits a hitherto unknown notebook of Thompson's conversations with Tagore.

About the Author

E. P. Thompson was the son of Edward J. Thompson. An internationally famous historian and Peace Movement campaigner, his books include The Making of the English Working Classes and Customs in Common.

Review

Dr Thompson has written a surprisingly detached and objective study in Alien Homage. The correspondence he had recently unearthed does provide a highly interesting picture of what he inelegantly calls the "interface" between Bengali and British cultures, especially before and after the last turn of the century. - Times Literary Supplement,It is the great achievement of E.P. Thompson's book that it so credibly contest that too predictable model. Thompson pere in fact emerges from `Alien Homage' as a highly complex figure, ... a deeply challenging intervention in current debates about the nature of colonial literary cultures. - R.J. Dingley.
