Description
This volume provides a comprehensive survey of the contemporary study of Islamic law and a critical analysis of its deficiencies. Written by outstanding senior and emerging scholars in their fields, it offers an innovative historiographical examination of the field of Islamic law and an ideal introduction to key personalities and concepts.
While capturing the state of contemporary Islamic legal studies by chronicling how far the field has come, the Handbook also explains why certain debates recur and indicates fundamental gaps in our knowledge. Each chapter presents bold new avenues for research and will help readers appreciate the contested nature of key concepts and topics in Islamic law. This Handbook will be a major reference work for scholars and students of Islam and Islamic law for years to come.

Review
"This volume gives a comprehensive survey of the state of knowledge today...The volume demonstrates how far we have now moved...towards a study of Islamic law as a phenomenon that varies dramatically with historical and social contexts, and how the “texts” interact with these realities in myriad different ways. It is highly recommended for those who wish to be informed about the state of knowledge in the field today." - Knut S. Vikør, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies
"An innovative historiographical examination of a wide range of topics in the areas of Islamic Law and Islamic Legal Studies...the Handbook, considering the breadth, depth and perspectives it provides on a wide range of areas of Islamic Law and Islamic Legal Studies, has few if any competitors. Its comprehensive nature and structure, where for the first time such diverse topics that encompass Islamic Law have been included in one volume, make it unique" - Sairah Narmah-Alqasim, The Law Teacher
"The Handbook makes an important contribution to our knowledge of areas of Islamic law often neglected or ignored in more conventional academic environments, and for this reason alone should be read by anyone interested in contemporary Islamic jurisprudence." - Faris Nasrallah, Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law
