The Diary of Manu Gandhi (1946-48) features entries by Manubehn Gandhi, M.K. Gandhi's grandniece, detailing her life with him during that time. Starting out as an aide to Kasturba, Gandhi's ailing wife, Manu remained with the family until his assassination. The diary holds special significance as her writings were personally authenticated by Gandhi. Sixty years after his death, this publication makes available for the first time a valuable account of Gandhi's life and ideology.

Description
Manu Gandhi, the grandniece of M.K. Gandhi, became an integral part of his journey in 1943 at the age of fifteen, serving as an aide to Kasturba Gandhi during their imprisonment in Pune's Aga Khan Palace. Actively participating in his final yajna and present during the invocation of Rama at his passing, her writings span from 1943 to 1948 depicting his life and his philosophy. Following a first volume covering the initial period of their association from 1943 to 1944, this is the second volume of Manu Gandhi's diaries edited and translated by Tridip Suhrud and covers the years 1946 to 1948. Her diaries were authenticated by Gandhi himself. Within its pages, Manu's entries offer profound insights into Gandhi's life as a prisoner, his unwavering commitment to collective non-violence, ideological struggles, and the ongoing quest to find his authentic voice, and a poignant glimpse into his solitary pilgrimage to Noakhali during the 1946 riots. This diary unfolds a narrative of turbulent times, encompassing Gandhi's marches, fasts, negotiations leading to Indian independence, partition riots, and ultimately concluding with his tragic assassination on January 30, 1948.
Tridip Suhrud, Professor and Provost at CEPT University and Director of Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad, is a writer and translator, having worked on the intellectual and cultural history of modern Gujarat, and the Gandhian intellectual tradition.
